Being at #digcult12 has made me think about how we tend to make time a constraint...not in terms of time management per se, but how it makes us think in a linear fashion.
Technology evolves in the main way as a linear process as knowledge becomes greater technology seems to become smaller.
The problem is this...
If we let the linear progression of technology frame our thinking....then we will only think in a linear fashion. and yet to think in a human way remains relatively stable and actually more circular!!
Isn't half of our problem as humans this.....we are not linear...in social media we even talk of social circles, networks etc
We need to be human in delivering social marketing and indeed a social business model. For instance pamphlets just like blogs made us communicate feverishly...then we can do that...well we move on...maybe to TV or You Tube...maybe to meetings or social networking.
What that means is that just creating a blog won't change the world anymore....learn from history, learn from how socialising evolved....it is finding what feels new due to technology but safe because it is how we adapt to newness.
I would argue rather than timelines we should think about circlelines!
We live in cycles of revolutions.....we move in a fairly linear manner from an agircultural to an industrial to an experience economy. But how humans perceive these things don't change.
We act in many ways just as we did....we fear change, we learn to accept, we adapt and we embrace.
We create relationships in the same way as we always did...we connect, we find shared interests, we give value to each other and we then embrace the friendship.
So your challenge today is this.....if time wasn't forcing you to think of budgets, of appraisals, of technological advancement....then how would you act?
Then do it! It is so much more human!
And now off to do my talk on whether digital filters rather than human filters are affecting how we think of history!
